From Book to Film

The making of the Women Who Dig documentary

Over the past year, I’ve been collaborating with Edmonton-based filmmaker, Anna Kuelken, on the Women Who Dig documentary film. The documentary features the stories of five remarkable women farmers in Western Canada who are feeding their communities, stewarding the land, preserving Indigenous seeds, and challenging unjust structures of the global food system.

In 2022, Anna and I were thrilled to receive a grant from the Alberta Foundation for the Arts to initiate filming for the project. Anna travelled to northern British Columbia, the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, and Winnipeg, Manitoba to meet with women in their gardens, greenhouses, and the forests that they call home. The impact of women’s work on our world is often an untold story, especially in farming. We believe that the Women Who Dig documentary has the potential to make a positive impact in the world.

We are currently fundraising $5000 to enable her to continue working on the film in the summer of 2023. If you’re able to make a small donation, we’d be so grateful. Please visit our Go Fund Me page for more information:
