Harvesting Momentum
BEHIND-THE-SCENES OF THE WOMEN WHO DIG FILM
Over the summer, Anna Kuelken, director of the Women Who Dig Film has been busy travelling to meet with women on the land in Alberta, Manitoba, and British Columbia.
In July, she visited Rachel Herbert, of Trail’s End Beef, in the Porcupine Hills of southern Alberta. Herbert, a 5th generation rancher, runs a grass-fed and finished beef operation with her family.
In recent years, Herbert and her family have been facing immense pressures from climate change, including record-breaking temperatures, drought, and the threat of coal mining projects in the eastern slopes of the Albertan Rocky Mountains.
Earlier this summer, I had the pleasure of joining Anna on set, downtown Winnipeg, as she filmed Audrey Logan, an Indigenous knowledge keeper and urban forager.
Twenty years ago, Logan planted a pine tree at the Spirit Park Community Garden, an urban space in West Broadway where people come to plant, harvest food and medicine, and relax in nature beneath the shade of the trees. She works closely with community organizations to grow and distribute food, medicine for Elders, and promote food sovereignty.
We’re grateful to Herbert, Logan, and the other women involved in the Women Who Dig Film for welcoming us into their homes and farms, as we continue to tend to this project with great care.
In mid-September, Anna and I will be traveling with a Hot Docs delegation to Camden, Maine, to participate in the Camden International Film Festival.
Anna was recently selected by Hot Docs to pitch our film concept to potential networks and distributors.
